Comprehensive Dry Eye Screenings

As part of our commitment to your eye health, we include dry eye screenings in all of our comprehensive eye exams. From the results of your dry eye screening, we can create a personalized plan for diagnosis and treatment.

This proactive approach allows us to detect signs of dry eye early, preventing more serious complications and getting a head-start on treatment so worsening dry eye symptoms don’t derail your day-to-day life.

Your Tear Film & Dry Eye

Your eyes need tears to stay healthy. Your tear film is a layer of tears covering the surface of your eyes that protects against infections, provides nutrients, and helps your eyes stay hydrated.

It is made of 3 layers

  • The oily outer layer
  • The watery middle layer
  • The inner mucus layer

When there’s an issue with any 1 of the layers, you can develop dry eye and inflammation.

Common Dry Eye Symptoms

Common symptoms of dry eye syndrome can include:

  • Stinging or gritty eyes
  • Scratchy and uncomfortable eyes
  • Fluctuating vision
  • A burning feeling
  • The feeling of something in the eye

We can help you manage these symptoms through a personalized treatment plan

What Is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction?

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a chronic and progressive condition affecting the function of the tiny meibomian glands that line your eyelids. These glands produce the tear film’s oily layer, which is essential for preventing your tears from evaporating too quickly.

MGD symptoms are similar to dry eyes, and can include:

IPL treatments can address MGD by gently stimulating your meibomian glands, helping release the oils your eyes need.

Our Dry Eye Diagnostic Process

Accurate diagnosis is the key to effective treatment, and we use various diagnostic tools to thoroughly assess your eyes’ condition. Our diagnostic techniques include different tools and tests to get our team started on preparing your treatment plan.

Our team is always happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have.

Meibography

This imaging technique allows us to visualize the meibomian glands, which play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy tear film. By assessing the health of these glands, we can better understand the root cause of your dry eye symptoms.

We use special dyes to highlight areas of dryness or damage on the surface of your eye, providing valuable insights into the severity and type of dry eye you may have.

These tests measure how quickly your tears evaporate or break up, helping us determine the stability of your tear film.

This test measures tear production by placing a small strip of paper under your lower eyelid. It’s simple yet effective, and it can help us evaluate whether your eyes are producing enough tears to keep them properly lubricated.

Our Dry Eye Treatments

Dry eye can affect just about anyone, regardless of your age, gender, or race. However, certain factors can increase your risk of developing this condition, including:

We carefully consider all of these factors when considering your treatment options.

OptiLIGHT by Lumenis

OptiLIGHT by Lumenis is a light-based, noninvasive treatment done in the area below the eyes to manage dry eye. The first and only IPL FDA-approved for dry eye management.

The treatment is safe, gentle, and is backed by more than 20 clinical studies.

OptiLIGHT uses precise pulses of light to reduce the inflammation that is typically associated with dry eye disease, improve tear break-up time, and increase meibomian gland functionality.

Learn More About OptiLIGHT

OptiPLUS radiofrequency treatment is an advanced, noninvasive procedure designed to address the underlying causes of dry eye. By using controlled radiofrequency energy, OptiPLUS stimulates collagen production and improves the function of the meibomian glands, which are essential for producing the oils that keep your tear film stable.

Meibomian gland expression helps us clear blocked meibomian glands, improving the flow of oil into your tears.

During meibomian gland expression, our team will use a specialized tool or a paddle to apply gentle pressure along the eyelid margins. The pressure can help clear any blockages within the glands and address meibomian gland dysfunction.

We offer a variety of prescription and over-the-counter eye drops like Oasis Tears Plus and Regener-Eyes to help increase tear production, soothe irritation, and reduce inflammation.

Punctal plugs are small devices placed in the tear duct of the eye to stop the tears from draining out of the eye. The plugs work by restoring the moisture in the eye by keeping it on the surface.

Punctal plugs are quite small and about the size of a grain of rice. There are 2 main types of plugs: temporary plugs that will dissolve on their own over time and semi-permanent plugs that need to be removed by an eye care professional.

Warm compresses and eyelid sprays can help loosen blockages in the meibomian glands, which produce the oily layer of your tears.

We also offer Omega-3 supplements. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for healthy tear production. We may recommend incorporating omega-3 supplements into your daily routine.
